The use of Short Message Services (SMS) is growing at a rapid rate with SMS Application-to-Peer (A2P) retrieving most of the messages sent. In 2017 alone, 1.67 trillion A2P vendor messages were sent.

This number will increase to around 1.7 trillion in 2018, and in 2022, MobileSquared estimates that A2P SMS traffic will grow to 2.8 trillion.

It is wise to say there are business opportunities for A2P SMS vendor service providers and will be exploited which will consequently lead to the emergence of A2P SMS providers. This service gives you five things to consider when choosing an A2P SMS Service Provider.

Coverage Area of a Provider

The first thing you should consider before choosing an AP2 SMS provider is to agree to the area. You need to understand which areas are covered by any service provider before considering other matters. No matter how good the SMS Service Provider API is, it will not work if the area you are aiming for is not covered.

Type of Coverage

In general, there are two types – direct and indirect connections. For direct connections, there is a direct path between the A2P SMS Provider gateway and the Mobile Network Operator (MNO). However, in the case of indirect connections, SMS Providers must route their connections to MNO through other SMS Providers.

Unless in cases where there are no A2P SMS Providers with direct connections, it is better to use direct connections.

SMS Gateway Throughput and Latency

Latency is the time required to perform several actions while throughput is the number of actions executed per unit time. Throughput and Latency determine how fast the SMS is processed and begin transmission to MNO. Usually, any SMS gateway that cannot process and start sending messages in milliseconds is not eligible to be an SMS gateway.

Phone Number Portability Handling

One of the things you should consider when choosing an SMS API for your A2P SMS Campaign is how the gateway.

MNO gives customers the option to port their phone numbers to other operators without losing the number.

The ability to port numbers from one network to another creates problems for A2P SMS Providers.

When the SMS Provider wants to send a message to a number, it routes the message according to the prefix used which is mapped to a particular network/operator.

SMS Channel Route

The route used by the AP2 SMS provider is as important as the other factors in this list. In general, we have two types of channels used by SMS gateways to send SMS.

The first and recommended one to use is “Tier One Connections” which are 100 percent legitimate. As a legitimate business, you should not be found using illegal methods. The second route is the Gray route which is usually associated with indirect connections and SS7 leakage – vulnerabilities that can be exploited.
